A German Factory's Employee Phone Lockers: One Existing Staff Card, One Assigned Compartment
A German manufacturing plant needed a place for employees to store their phones safely during shifts — and to get them back charged. The hard part was not the cabinet. The plant already ran a staff card system it had used for years, and did not want to issue a second credential just to open a locker. LinQu delivered a 40-compartment phone charging locker that reads the existing cards directly: one card, one assigned door.

The Challenge
What this German manufacturing plant needed sounded simple enough: employees need somewhere safe to leave their phones during a shift, and the phone should have charge in it when they pick it up again.
The complexity was in the constraints.
First, the plant already had a staff card system. Every employee carried one, and the cards had been in use across the site for years. Issuing a second credential just for a locker — a new card, a new PIN sheet, or an app employees would have to install — means one more thing to administer and one more thing for people to remember. This was the real starting point for the design.
Second, storing and charging had to be the same action. A cabinet that only locks means employees collect a dead phone at the end of the shift. A charging rack that does not lock is not secure storage. Both had to happen inside the same compartment, without the employee doing anything extra.
Third, each person needed a fixed place. The logic used by public storage lockers — scan, get whichever compartment happens to be free — does not fit here. People arrive at the same site every working day; the compartment should be theirs.
The LinQu Solution
Reuse the existing staff card. Add no new credential. The unit was fitted with an NFC reader that reads the plant's existing employee cards directly. Staff do not carry an extra card, install an app, or memorise a new code — they present the same card they already use on site. PIN entry remains available as a fallback, so a forgotten or misread card never means a phone locked out of reach.
One card, one compartment, permanently bound. Each card is mapped to a fixed door. An employee presents their card and the same compartment opens every time. This is deliberately different from the scan-and-be-assigned model used in public storage: for people who come to the same place every working day, a fixed position is itself the efficiency. It also means the card is the record — no separate log of who is using which door.
Charging starts when the door closes. All 40 compartments are independently powered, so a phone begins charging the moment it is put away, and compartments do not interfere with one another. Each one contains a three-in-one cable — Micro-USB, Type-C and Lightning — so employees do not need to bring their own, and fast charging is supported up to 18W. The power system is industrial-grade with over-current, over-voltage and short-circuit protection: this unit runs continuously in a factory environment, and the power section cannot be built to consumer standards.
Configured for this specific site. A single 40-door cabinet with a 7-inch operating screen — no secondary cabinet in this project. Overall dimensions are 990 (W) × 300 (D) × 1800 (H) mm, with each compartment measuring 150 mm wide and 154.8 mm high, leaving room for a phone in a case together with its cable. The body is galvanised and cold-rolled steel, powder-coated with anti-rust treatment and an anti-pry structural design. The plant specified its own colours: a white body with dark blue doors. Compartment occupancy and usage records can be reviewed remotely from the management backend.
Documentation for the EU market. The equipment carries CE certification and is supported by an EU Authorised Representative; EPR registration applies for the German market. These documents were available at the point the unit entered the plant.
Results
The unit was delivered in July 2026. The customer left a five-star review, rating both Supplier Service and On-time Shipment as very satisfied.

For buyers evaluating a similar deployment, this project makes one specific point. If your site already runs access cards or staff badges, those cards can usually become the key to the locker as well. There is no inherent need to build a parallel identity system around a single piece of equipment — but it is a requirement worth raising before the order, not after the unit arrives.
